If you visit Taiwan around September or October, you might notice something unusual in the evening: families and friends sitting outside their homes, grilling meat, chatting, drinking, and enjoying the night together.
Welcome to the Mid-Autumn Festival in Taiwan!
What Is the Mid-Autumn Festival?
The Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節, Zhōngqiū Jié) is one of the most important traditional festivals in Taiwan. It falls on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. For many Taiwanese people, the full moon represents reunion, so the festival is a time for families and friends to get together.
Mooncakes: The Classic Mid-Autumn Treat
You can't talk about the Mid-Autumn Festival without talking about mooncakes. Mooncakes (月餅, yuèbǐng) are shared with family, friends, colleagues, and business partners. Traditional fillings include red bean, mung bean, salted egg yolk, and taro, while modern versions may feature chocolate, matcha, fruit, or coffee.
Taiwan's Special Tradition: BBQ
In Taiwan, the Mid-Autumn Festival has become strongly associated with barbecuing. Families, neighbors, and friends gather around small grills with meat, sausages, seafood, vegetables, mushrooms, and toast. Depending on local rules, you may even see people grilling in front of their homes or in courtyards. Today, asking “Do you want to have a BBQ for Mid-Autumn Festival?” sounds completely natural in Taiwan.
Don't Forget Pomelos
Another popular Mid-Autumn Festival food in Taiwan is the pomelo, called 柚子 (yòuzi). There's also a funny tradition: after eating it, children—and sometimes adults—put the peel on their heads like a hat.
