PATRICIA'S TAIWAN STORY|Patricia

Typhoon Days in Taiwan: A Bowl of Instant Noodles

Wind and rain outside, the smell of instant noodles inside—a familiar typhoon-day memory for many people in Taiwan.

In Taiwan, if you ask a friend, “What should we eat on a typhoon day?” you might get a familiar answer: “Instant noodles, of course!”

You can eat instant noodles any day. So why do they seem to taste especially good during a typhoon? Let's explore this side of everyday life in Taiwan, one warm bowl at a time.

Before the Typhoon Arrives

As a typhoon approaches, people follow weather updates and check their supplies of drinking water and food. At the supermarket, you may see shoppers picking up instant noodles, crackers, and canned food so they can make fewer trips outside.

Instant noodles keep well and are quick to prepare, so they often appear on pre-typhoon shopping lists. It also helps to have food that needs no heating, since boiling water may be difficult during a power outage.

The Big Question: Do We Have Work Tomorrow?

Along with tracking the storm, people often ask, “Do we have work tomorrow? Is school open?” Friends and coworkers may remind one another to check official announcements.

In everyday conversation, people often use the phrase “typhoon day off.” But for those who still need to work, a typhoon can make the day even busier. Being able to stay home with a warm bowl of noodles is a small comfort worth appreciating.

Why Do Instant Noodles Feel Different on a Typhoon Day?

Imagine rain tapping against the windows and trees swaying in the wind. You're at home, opening a packet of noodles. As you pour in hot water, a familiar aroma fills the room.

A few minutes later, you lift the lid and steam rises toward your face. With the storm outside and warm soup in front of you, a simple meal feels a little more comforting.

For some people in Taiwan, eating instant noodles during a typhoon brings back childhood memories of staying home with family. The comfort comes from both the noodles and the memories.

What Goes into Your Bowl?

Some people enjoy their noodles simply prepared with hot water. Others cook them in a pot and add an egg, some vegetables, or a few slices of meat.

A simple packet becomes a personal “typhoon-day special.” Everyone has their own toppings—and perhaps a favorite flavor, too.

What's your style: keep it simple, add an egg, or turn it into a feast with whatever is in the fridge?
