What to Eat at a Taipei Night Market

Taipei night markets are loud, bright, busy, and delicious. They're one of the easiest ways to experience Taiwan's everyday food culture.

You don't need to try everything. Choose a few foods, share with friends, and leave room for something unexpected.

1. Pepper Bun|

Hújiāo bǐng

A crispy baked bun filled with juicy pork, scallions, and black pepper. Best eaten hot.

2. Taiwanese Fried Chicken|

Yánsūjī

Fried chicken and other bite-sized foods are often seasoned with pepper, garlic, and fried basil.

3. Oyster Omelet|

Ézǎijiān

Oysters, egg, greens, and a chewy starch mixture topped with sweet-savory sauce.

4. Sweet Potato Balls|

Dìguā qiú

Crispy outside, chewy inside, and perfect for eating while you walk.

5. Stinky Tofu|

Chòu dòufu

The smell is famous, but the flavor is usually milder than visitors expect. Try the crispy fried version first.

6. Bubble Tea|

Zhēnzhū nǎichá

Taiwan is the birthplace of bubble tea. You can usually choose your sugar and ice levels.

Useful Mandarin|

Wǒ yào zhège.
I'd like this one.

Zhè shì shénme?
What is this?

Bú yào là.
Not spicy, please.

Shǎo bīng, bàn táng.
Less ice, half sugar.

Hǎochī!
Delicious!

Night Market Etiquette|

Keep moving when an alley is crowded, stand to the side when deciding what to buy, and use the bins provided. Cash is still useful at many stalls.

Patricia's Tip|Patricia

Don't treat a night market like a checklist. Follow the smell, see what locals are lining up for, and try one thing you didn't plan to eat.
